Step by Step Are Taking Big Strides with Give A Little’s Contactless Fundraising
Step by Step, is a youth homelessness charity supporting young people facing homelessness and adversity across Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, and surrounding areas through services like housing, personal development, and emotional well-being support. They recently signed up to Give A Little to bring their fundraising up to date.
21 February 2025Nic Goom, Head of Income Generation at Step by Step, shared insights into their journey, "People no longer have cash, and we've seen a decline in fundraising income overall so we needed to be strategic and make it easier for people to give," she explained.
After looking at various providers, Step by Step chose Give A Little for its affordability, flexibility, and many features. Nic highlighted the reasons for their decision, "Give A Little was the most flexible and affordable option out there. We love that we aren't tied to one particular device and have lots of options when it comes to contactless donations. The fact that Give A Little doesn't charge per device or user also sets them apart and was a huge positive for us, giving us the ability to really add to our contactless donation offering"
Step by Step started their cashless journey with the portable CollecTin More contactless donation box paired with Give A Little software. Its first outing was at their recent Sleepout event at Farnborough Business Park, and Nic recalls the excitement among staff: "The campaign designs were an instant hit with the team, they were all queuing up to donate!"
They also collected over £230 in donations - contributions Nic is sure they wouldn’t have received without the contactless donation option.
The charity has embraced creating tailored campaigns for events and appeals. As well as the Sleepout, their plans include co-branded campaigns for corporate golf days, festive designs for Christmas markets, and another for their Open Doors Campaign.
As well as the CollecTin More contactless donation box, the charity has created a DIY contactless donation point by using an Android tablet and SumUp card reader they already had. They’ve also integrated Stripe and have started using Give A Little Tap to Pay for its simplicity and zero setup cost. By integrating both SumUp and Stripe payment processors, the charity is really making use of the flexibility that Nic mentioned as being a key reason for choosing Give A Little. Having attended one of Give A Little's monthly Welcome Webinars they also now have plans to start using QR codes too. They'll be adding QR codes to all staff name badges to allow them to easily collect donations, and also on posters and billboards.
Since partnering with Give A Little, Step by Step has seen a positive response from donors. "Everyone just seems to 'get it'.” Nic shared “People are so used to tapping a card or paying via digital wallets nowadays, which is why we signed up. I'd say our average donation has definitely increased too!"
Although only just starting out on their Give A Little journey, the charity has had a great start, Nic offers her advice - "make use of all the features that are available with Give A Little and don't be afraid to test things. If you're on a very small budget, consider starting with a DIY point of donation and maybe QR codes, and then add more devices when you can. Make use of the free Welcome Webinar that Give A Little organises each month - we thought it was fantastic and came away with so many ideas!"
And to finish we asked Nic if she would recommend Give A Little to other charities, Nic enthusiastically responded, "Yes! I already have, to a charity I am a Trustee for. It’s so easy to get started and is so accessible. We’re so glad we signed up!"
