The budget-friendly guide to contactless and regular giving for small charities

If you run a small charity, community group, or PTA, you already know the struggle. You have a community that loves what you do, but when it’s time to collect donations, you keep hearing the same five words: "Sorry, I don’t have cash!"

As we move closer to a truly cashless society, relying on a physical donation bucket or spare change is no longer enough. But if you’re operating on a shoestring budget, the idea of buying expensive card readers and paying high monthly software fees can feel completely overwhelming.

The good news? Moving to digital giving and collecting contactless donations doesn't have to break the bank. By starting small and leveraging high-quality, budget-friendly platforms like Give A Little, you can offer your donors the flexibility of one-off digital taps and the stability of regular monthly giving - all in one place.

Moving beyond the anonymous bucket

Think about the traditional charity bucket. A donor drops a pound coin or a handful of spare change into a slot, walks away, and that is where the relationship ends. It is completely anonymous. You cannot thank them, you cannot update them on how their money was used, and you have no way of knowing if they will ever support you again.

Digital and contactless giving completely flips this model on its head. When a donor taps their card or scans a QR code, it transforms a fleeting transaction into the opportunity for a genuine partnership.

Contactless technology gives you the ability to know who your donors are, moving away from the faceless nature of physical coins.

Rethinking contactless: It’s not just for one-off taps

When most charity committees think about contactless donation boxes, they picture an alternative to a bucket - something to catch passing foot fall or collect loose change at an exit door. But viewing contactless giving as purely a one-off tool means missing out on its greatest strength: building a sustainable,

.

Even if a monthly donor is only able to commit to a small amount - say, £3 or £5 a month - that consistent "trickle" of income is the absolute holy grail for a small organisation. It gives you sustainable, predictable support to cover fixed costs while building deep donor loyalty and ongoing stewardship.

Give A Little's software is also built for flexibility, offering different ways to set up your fundraising. A great example is the Magic campaign template, which generates a blended app and web campaign that automatically scales to fit any screen size. Tools like this allow small charities to give donors a completely seamless choice between a one-off donation or a

- regardless of whether they are tapping a card reader or phone at an event or scanning a QR code on their sofa.

Three very different organisations -

LEAP
,
Husky Rescue Ireland
, and
LionHeart
- evolved their fundraising strategy by using contactless and digital giving campaigns to secure long-term, regular support.

LEAP: Creating a predictable financial baseline

Based in Scotland, the Local Energy Action Plan (LEAP) runs a "pay-what-you-can" surplus food project called the Lochwinnoch Community Larder. While the larder was thriving, relying on spontaneous cash donations made it impossible for the team to forecast their future. They needed a reliable way to plan ahead.

By launching Give A Little in January 2026, they built a blended system using a fixed contactless donation box at the larder alongside web links and QR codes for social media. Donors were given total flexibility. For the larder's manager, Charlotte Keir, the introduction of a regular monthly option was transformative:

"For a charity where you’re relying on donations and funding, if you know there’s a set amount rather than it fluctuating so wildly with one-off donations, it makes it easier to plan. The monthly donations have been a great thing actually."

Crucially, it also allowed LEAP to gather support from a distance. Many of their regular monthly donors don't actually visit the larder to collect food, but they care deeply about the environmental mission. Digital giving gave these remote supporters a frictionless way to stay connected and contribute consistently. Within just a few months, LEAP secured nearly 30 regular monthly donors, giving the charity a stable baseline of income that helps the whole team breathe easier.

Husky Rescue Ireland: Turning regular giving into the "gold thing"

Husky Rescue Ireland is a volunteer-led organisation rescuing and rehoming large breeds with complex medical needs. Because some dogs remain in the rescue for life, the charity faces ongoing, fixed veterinary and kennel costs that one-off emergency donations simply cannot sustain.

The charity’s Chairman, Andy Finn, recognised that they needed a steady, reliable stream of income - what he calls the

"gold thing"
every charity wants to achieve. They used Give A Little to create highly visual, targeted "Sponsor a Dog" campaigns for individual animals.

They took this

campaign straight to the public in two innovative ways:

  • On the streets:
Volunteers used NFC-enabled tablets during street collections. By using Stripe Tap to Pay directly on the tablet, they discovered that people were incredibly willing to sign up for monthly recurring gifts on the spot - with zero extra hardware required.

  • In the community:
They placed strategic QR codes on stands inside local veterinary clinics and coffee shops, allowing animal lovers to sign up for a monthly sponsorship at their own convenience.

By using contactless and digital tech to drive monthly sponsorships rather than just loose change, Husky Rescue Ireland raised over

€5,000
in just a few months. The regular income helps cover their fixed monthly costs, while Give A Little's dedicated recurring donations reports allow the volunteers to easily track the real-time status of their supporters and manage their stewardship sponsorship packs effectively.

LionHeart: Overcoming the corporate fundraising puzzle

LionHeart is a benevolent fund supporting RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) members and their families. Historically, members could opt to donate to the charity when paying their annual professional fees. However, with more corporate employers now paying these fees directly on behalf of staff, LionHeart faced a massive drop-off in individual, yearly touchpoints.

To bridge this gap, Supporter Engagement and Fundraising Manager Faye Smith had to completely rethink their pitch at conferences and corporate events. They needed a simple, dual-messaging approach that didn't overcomplicate the ask:

"We ended up with this nice simple graphic that we used alongside the Give A Little Champion App with a clear message: 'If you pay your subs yourself, just say yes. That's all you need to do. And if your firm pays, please donate £2 a month.' In fundraising, you want the message to be simple... and a really obvious call to action."

Using the Give A Little Champion App, the team could capture that £2-a-month generosity right then and there in the room, rather than hoping people would remember to visit the website later. It allowed them to securely collect Gift Aid and donor details on the spot, turning a brief event interaction into a long-term relationship.

Ready to get started?

You don't need a massive marketing budget or a dedicated tech team to take your charity cashless. Whether you are running a school fair, operating a food larder, or fundraising at a corporate conference, the recipe for success is exactly the same:

1. Start where you are (and for free!)

When you are watching every penny, you can't afford to risk vital funds on technology that might not work for your audience. The secret is to start small, run a trial, and prove the concept before investing a single penny.

Using the tech you already own (like smartphones and tablets) and Give A Little’s free Basic service, which allows you to raise up to £1,000 in a rolling 12-month period.

Take The Friends of Groombridge Primary School (FGPS). As a parent-teacher association run entirely by volunteers, they wanted to reduce the risk and admin stress of handling physical cash at busy school events.

Instead of buying hardware upfront, their PTA Treasurer, Steve, started on Give A Little’s free Basic tier. He downloaded the Give A Little Point of Donation app onto an Android device to test Stripe Tap to Pay at a school event. Because this technology turns a mobile device into a card reader, they could test live digital donations with zero financial risk.

Once the team had successfully tested the technology and seen it in action, they had the confidence to upgrade to Give A Little Premium. Starting at just £7.50 a month (excluding VAT) with no contract tie-in, this unlocked advanced features like integrated Gift Aid

declarations. It also gave them access to the Give A Little Champion App, which allows charities to invite an unlimited number of volunteers to collect donations using their own iPhones or Android devices.

2. Put donors in control with high-quality donor focused software

The magic of a donor-focused platform like Give A Little is that it shifts the control to the donor, making the giving experience feel personal, modern, and frictionless.

Rather than presenting donors with a transactional payment screen, the software lets you add your own distinct charity branding, colours, and imagery. When a donor interacts with your donation point, they are met with clear choices that match their budget and preferences:

  • A choice of donation values:
You can display targeted, customisable amount buttons (e.g., £5, £10, £25) alongside a choose your own amount option, giving the donor the power to choose how much they wish to donate without the need to make an awkward ask.

  • Gift Aid:
Eligible UK donors can opt-in at the point of donation. Give A Little even remembers the donor's payment data for future donations, meaning they don't have to re-enter their details next time.

  • Marketing consent:
Donors can easily opt-in to stay in touch, turning a one-off contributor into a long-term member of your community.

  • The regular giving switch:
Donors are given a clear, transparent choice between making a one-off gift or converting it into a recurring monthly commitment.

  • Instant digital receipts:
Donors can choose to receive a digital receipt straight to their email, giving them immediate peace of mind.

3. Track, segment your income and claim Gift Aid effortlessly

When you are trying to maximise every pound, data is your best friend. Give A Little allows you to create unlimited campaigns, meaning you can track, segment, and understand exactly where your income is coming from.

For LionHeart, the backend reporting has been a game-changer for administrative efficiency. Faye Smith notes:

"The admin side of Give A Little is incredibly user-friendly and intuitive. It is so handy to be able to group our supporters in different ways to see what they've raised, and the way the entire system is set up makes tracking our data incredibly straightforward."

With dedicated reports, charities can instantly track regular monthly donors, monitor how much individual volunteer teams have raised, and pull seamless Gift Aid reports to submit straight to HMRC.

4. Empower "everyone to be a fundraiser" at community events

Once you have the software in place, you can eliminate the logistical challenge of managing, charging, and passing around heavy, expensive physical card readers. By using the Give A Little Champion App, you can invite an unlimited number of volunteers, trustees, or ambassadors to collect donations using their own iPhones or Android devices.

The

Friends of Groombridge Primary School
scaled up their trial to use the Give A Little Champion App at their annual May Fair. Volunteers simply used the app on their own phones to accept contactless donations across different stalls - from the Nerf gun target games to the tombola.

Similarly,

LionHeart
is currently rolling the app out to their 10 trustees and 80 ambassadors. This approach leans right into the mindset that any team member can comfortably and securely invite a donation during day-to-day professional networking or regional challenge events.

By removing the friction of cash and embracing high-quality, donor-focused software, you aren't just making it easier for people to give - you are building a secure, sustainable future for your charity.
