How Kingston Hospital tripled its contactless fundraising income in less than a year with Give A Little

When you're managing cashless giving within a busy hospital trust, finding a solution that is cost-effective is just as vital as finding one that is secure, reliable, and user-friendly. You need an affordable setup that doesn't eat into your donations, whilst still giving a small fundraising team the direct control and flexibility to adapt as needed.

That was exactly the goal for Chris Moore, Communications and Engagement Senior Manager at Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust. Kingston Hospital Charity is committed to improving the quality of care and the experience of everyone who comes to the hospital or uses its services across the community. To help make its vital work possible, the team needed a modern cashless fundraising solution that gave them as much control as possible.

By switching to Give A Little, they unlocked an accredited, highly flexible platform that keeps costs remarkably low and has outpaced their initial fundraising forecasts raising over £11,000 since signing up.

"We've not even been using Give A Little for a year, but we've already tripled our income... with a lot less costs as well," Chris explains. "It's been an amazing move for us and has absolutely exceeded expectations. We didn't expect to achieve that so quickly."

The financial transparency and low barrier to entry made the transition a no-brainer. "The key thing is Give A Little allows us to be really fluid in our approach to contactless giving - at a price tag that is very fair and transparent," says Chris.

The importance of scalability and control when choosing a cashless fundraising platform

Beyond the cost savings, the motivation to move to a new cashless giving supplier was all about scalability and control.

"The motivation was to have more management of contactless ourselves and manage the project pipeline ourselves," Chris notes. "Within large organisations, things can take a long time, and when you’re also dealing with a third party it takes even longer. With Give A Little, we knew you had all the accreditations, and it allows us to take more control and have more flexibility in the way we operate."

The team quickly expanded their footprint from their initial two contactless donation stations to five devices across the hospital, ensuring more departments and wards can benefit directly from the funds raised. Because the Give A Little platform is entirely scalable, they can treat placement of devices as an ongoing test. If a department requests a donation point, the team can configure it instantly. "There’s no limits to what we could do," says Chris. "Nine times out of ten, if someone says they would like it in their department, we can turn it around quickly."

Professional, consistent and impactful: The power of a great user interface

A significant driver behind the charity’s cashless fundraising growth is the upgrade in the user experience. Kingston Hospital has been rolling out CollecTin More contactless donation boxes, which use Give A Little software, along with signage including a giant board with an eye-catching "Tap to Say Thank You" message currently arriving for the Emergency Department (ED).

Central to this success is the Give A Little software itself. The user interface displayed on the CollecTin More boxes delivers a seamless and professional look and feel for each single campaign. Crucially, it provides total consistency across the donor journey, whether a supporter is giving on-site at a contactless donation device or interacting online via a QR Code.

"The donation stations we had before moving to Give A Little were very basic," says Chris. "One major thing now is how we can build the experience around the devices. We are doing a lot of work on how we frame them - along with the ability to change the campaign displayed on the screen, it allows us to test what works and adapt to what really works."

By matching the on-screen visuals with the physical marketing boards surrounding the devices, the team has created a beautifully cohesive journey thanks to using Give A Little Magic campaigns which can be used across both web and app. This allows the funds from either channel to be collected under one campaign and the campaign scales nicely across different screen sizes which is ideal for QR Codes in particular.  "The boards feature a QR code and both experiences match," Chris notes, referencing a lovely comment they recently received on LinkedIn praising the streamlined donor journey. "That seamless user experience across all devices has helped us massively."

Capturing the right moment for donors to give

In a bustling hospital environment, capturing the right moment to engage a potential donor is crucial.

"In every environment, you have seconds to make the impact and get someone to make that decision to give," Chris explains. "It's very hard in a hospital as there is so much going through your brain.”

To capture these fleeting moments, the team uses a smart mix of physical contactless donation boxes and strategic "out of home" marketing boards featuring QR codes across the site. The results show that if you get the placement right, the community is incredibly eager to give back:

  • The Intensive Care waiting room:
Placing dedicated QR codes here has proven deeply meaningful, quietly bringing in large, significant donations of £150 and £200 from families looking to express gratitude in a pivotal moment.

  • Frictionless Gift Aid:
While gathering donor details during a quick card tap is notoriously tough, the built-in Gift Aid flow has successfully secured over 60 declarations since October, unlocking income that previously would have been lost.

"I'm noticing that if I'm doing my job correctly by getting us in the right spaces, the return on investment is really high."

Driving staff engagement through ward-specific campaigns

A key benefit of Give A Little’s scalability is the ability to easily set up distinct, tailored campaigns for individual wards and departments. Chris has found that this localisation acts as a brilliant motivator for frontline hospital staff to champion cashless giving.

"The campaigns where the staff are on board really, really make a difference," Chris notes. "Maternity is the absolute example of that. You get parents going, 'Oh, thank you so much for the care you have given us.' The staff there are really proactive at prompting, letting grateful families know there is a donation point positioned right outside as they exit the unit and that has proven really successful."

The Give A Little Champion App

It isn’t just the contactless donation boxes and QR codes that are driving success. The hospital has been utilising the

Give A Little Champion App
to allow staff and supporters to fundraise for them using their phones. While their community challenge event side is moderately small and hospital staff are naturally time-poor, the app has been an absolute hit for events. Chris is actively working on onboarding more staff onto the app because "once they're on it, they love it."

The team is also keeping an eye on the future. While they aren't actively pushing monthly giving via the platform just yet, having the option built-in is a fantastic asset for future campaigns.

Exceptional support for charities of all sizes

For other healthcare trusts or non-profits looking to upgrade their contactless fundraising without stretching their budgets, Chris’s takeaway is that the right mix of accessible support, security, and fair economics makes Give A Little the perfect fit.

"Every time I get an email from the Give A Little team, I get a response at the moment, which is amazing for the small price it costs - the service is incredible," Chris concludes.

"Definitely as an organisation with over 11,000 charities, you would expect there to be more barriers and things to take a bit longer. You’ve got huge charities on your platform, but the time you give to all charities is a testament in itself."
